NFC is the abbreviation for Nearfield Communication. This type of data transmission is becoming more and more widespread and is enjoying great popularity, e.g. as a means of payment or access card. In principle, the transmission via NFC cards is contactless in most cases and is thus very similar to RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) technology. The two communication methods are therefore often compatible. Since contactless data transmission is not securely protected against external attacks according to ISO 15408, connection-based transmission is used for cashless payment via NFC cards, for example. This only works between equivalent active transmitters..

NFC cards require a mobile phone with a corresponding interface. Like the most common RFID cards, this uses the frequency 13.56 MHz and ISO 7816 protocols. Thus, RFID and NFC cards have the same features in the most important areas.
One difference between NFC cards and RFID cards, however, is in their performance and flexibility. RFID cards are usually relatively limited in their performance. RFID cards are very inflexible due to their small memory size and fixed range of use. With NFC cards, however, these limitations can be circumvented. The software control is taken over by the mobile phone, so various processes can be mapped on the basis of NFC using corresponding apps.
